The Gray Ladies now known as Red Cross Hospital Volunteers were started in Washington County in 1950 with Fawn Burton as Volunteer Coordinator. Hospital volunteers help people without regard to racial, religious, political, or other affiliations. These volunteers support and supplement the work of the hospital staff members. The gift of their time and dedication is truly a gift to the patients.
Office volunteers assist the chapter in a variety of ways. They answer all phone calls, file, copy, sort, type, process mail, and other duties too numerous to mention. They are a valued part of the function of the chapter office.
Red Cross Nurses volunteer for First Aid Stations, Disaster Health Services at Emergency Shelters and many other Red Cross Programs. Disaster Health Services is an integral part of Red Cross disaster preparedness and relief operations and our Nursing Services. It is designed to provide emergency and preventive health services to disaster victims and workers, as part of the total Red Cross disaster response.
